Super Mario Maker contains a version of the Gnat Attack minigame from Mario Paint. However, while the original Mario Paint minigame had no time limit, the Super Mario Maker version adds a very restrictive 30 second time limit to each round.

This results in the music never having the chance to play even a single loop to the end, and being impossible to hear fully in-game. While the music for the first two rounds is similar to the original SNES tracks, the boss battle against the giant robotic fly King Watinga has been rearranged with new instruments.

Above are two full loops of the King Watinga theme, which cannot be heard in-game for longer than 30 seconds into the track.

Mario Party Superstars has an unintuitive way of determining the winners of minigames whereby it does not matter what the state of the game is during the celebration, only what it is when the timer reaches 0.

In the footage, Yoshi and Donkey Kong are competing in Snowball Summit, with Donkey Kong being thrown off right before the end, but the game still counting both him and Yoshi as winners.

This is due to the fact that when the timer reached 0, Donkey Kong was still, just barely, technically above the playing field. While he was laterally outside the field and would also be below it only one frame later, the game looked exclusively at his height coordinate at the 0 second mark, and declared him to have won the game.

Early versions of Shy Guys found in development files for Yoshi’s Island. While the rightmost one resembles both the one in the final game and the Shy Guys’ original appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2/Doki Doki Panic, the other two show that the developers tried to experiment with the design before deciding it would be better off unchanged.

In New Super Mario Bros. U/Deluxe, there is an extremely simple and efficient way to obtain infinitely many extra lives with two players. For this, one of the players must be in the Super state (Luigi in the footage) and one in the Mini state (Mario in the footage).

The Mini player must pick up the Super player and then perform a Spin Jump on a Koopa Troopa passing underneath a ceiling that is 3 tiles away from the ground. The heights of the character stack and the ceiling match perfectly so that the Mini character is able to bounce off the Koopa Troopa many times per second, racking up an extremely large amount of 1-Ups very quickly.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Merlee can be paid to provide random beneficial effects during and after battles to Mario for a period of time, one of them being her increasing the amount of coins received after a battle.

However, despite this effect being able to be activated after some event battles, it does not actually work with them due to an oversight, providing 0 coins as they are hardcoded to not provide any coins.

In the footage, the Embers that attack Bobbery on Keelhaul Key (an event encounter) are defeated and the effect activates. Instead of providing some coins, after the effect animation concludes, the enemies simply disappear.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, some of the debug functions in the game’s code provide the player with a bizarre version of the game’s roster that is almost fully unlocked but contains two differences:
-it is always in Japanese even if the game itself is another version
-Luigi is absent.

Such a version of the roster is not normally possible during regular gameplay as the only way to unlock Mr. Game & Watch is to unlock every other character first, including Luigi. This is likely related to the fact that when a save file is first started, Pikachu is in the place Luigi eventually occupies, and is then moved down when Luigi is unlocked. Some part of this process may have been not yet implemented, or have been broken, when this debug menu was programmed.
