Unused extremely small seal-like character found in development files for Yoshi’s Island. While characters fitting into a standard 16x16 pixel square are common for other SNES games, Yoshi’s Island characters are usually larger, with even Shy Guys being 16x19 pixels.

In Super Mario Odyssey, it is possible to gain infinite height using two Chargin’ Chucks. If they are placed next to each other in two-player mode, then the Cappy player can simply alternate between capturing both, which will make them freeze in mid-air and rise slightly with each capture.

Given enough time, any arbitrary amount of height can be reached in this manner.

Super Mario 3D World contains an unlockable version of Mario Bros. (particularly the NES version) that replaces Mario with a second Luigi, called “Luigi Bros.”

Curiously, the Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury files for Luigi Bros. contain lists of cheat codes for four NES games: The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Metroid, and Kid Icarus. There is obviously no way to activate these codes as the games themselves are missing, and no codes for Mario/Luigi Bros. itself (or any other Mario games) are included.

In the Super Mario 3D World game style of Super Mario Maker 2, Piranha Creepers can be used to punish players that move quickly.

If a Piranha Creeper is placed on top of the Goal Pole in the manner shown in the footage, then approaching it too quickly will make the player character die. Only by moving very slowly will the character touch the Goal Pole’s hitbox first, and be able to complete the course.

In the beginning of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Peach is cursed to have her voice turn into bombs whenever she speaks*. The bombs cause explosions and shake the ground upon falling.

The prototype version of the game also adds Toads falling from the ceiling when Peach’s voice bombs explode, which was removed from the finished version of the game.

*this situation is more complex than it appears at that point in the game, but a more detailed explanation of the events is omitted to reduce spoilers for those who have not yet played it.

A prototype for Yoshi’s Island contained an early version of the game’s intro stage theme (playing in the small tutorial section between the intro cutscene and entering the world map for the first time) that is, surprisingly, more complex than the finished version.

While the finished version of this theme consists of a short loop, this early version has an actual melody on top of the loop that is removed in the final game.

Super Mario Galaxy contains four unused objects that each have a “cut plane”, a dividing plane in their models along which they are meant to be cut, as though sliced with a blade. It is unknown what these could have been used for.

As internal files for Super Mario Odyssey contain evidence of a scrapped “sword attack” for Mario, it is possible to speculate that a similar ability was at one point planned for Super Mario Galaxy as well (alongside with early Super Mario RPG designs using a sword but not implementing it in the final game, Mario games seem to have a history of proposing but ultimately forgoing the idea of giving Mario a sword).

New Super Mario Bros. U/Deluxe contains a “Phantom Piranha Plant” phenomenon whereby sometimes Stalking Piranha Plants will simply disappear without any explanation.

Note how in the footage, Toadette is on a platform with a Piranha Plant in the beginning, then very briefly lets it out of sight when picking up a Koopa shell. However, upon returning, the Piranha Plant is gone. Note also that these enemies are programmed to turn around on ledges, so it cannot have walked off the platform.
