In Big Boo’s Haunt in Super Mario 64, the doors depict a scary face with one glowing eye and one eye replaced with the doorknob.

While this is readily apparent by observing the door closely in the Nintendo 64 version (left), the lower resolution and lack of a purple glow in the left eye in the Super Mario 64 DS version (right) make the face harder to distinguish during regular gameplay.

Unused, extremely poorly lit cutscene found in the files of Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD.

It was seemingly intended to be used as the celebration cutscene at the end of Mission A-4 in Gloomy Manor, with the spiders being used to foreshadow the major spider theme of the following mission, A-5. Note that the spiders are barely visible in the footage and can mostly only be recognized by the bright spiderwebs and their glowing eyes.

Note also how Luigi is seemingly sucked offscreen at the end instead of being turned to pixels as usual. This and the bad lighting are likely due to the cutscene being unfinished.

Yoshi’s Island contains a rare “European trap” glitch whereby in the European version of the game, some exits from rooms such as this area in Level 6-7 will not spawn, leaving Yoshi seemingly trapped. Note how Yoshi attempts to exit the screen by following the arrows, which would normally let him leave, but cannot.

The exit may work correctly if Yoshi walks far enough away from it and returns, though it may take several tries and cause the player to assume that the level cannot be beaten in that state.

In Super Mario Odyssey, the cutscene of Mario flying the Odyssey for the first time from the Cascade Kingdom to the Sand Kingdom assumes that Mario will be in his regular outfit and that he will be wearing the Captain’s Hat, since he should not have any access to other clothing at that point in the game. Due to this assumption, the game employs models in this scene that are not used when Mario’s outfit can be anything the player chooses him to wear.

By modifying the game’s code and letting Mario use the Metal Mario Suit during this scene, it is revealed that his hair used here is actually a separate copy of his regular hair. As such, the game superimposes Mario’s regular hair over Metal Mario as seen in the screenshot.

The 2022 Holiday Tour in Mario Kart Tour used a promotional artwork that depicted Daisy as being cross-eyed. In the 2023 rerun of the same tour, the artwork was changed; while other small changes were made, the most visible one and the one most likely necessitating the update in the first place is making Daisy less cross-eyed.

The animation swaps between the 2022 image and the 2023 image every second, for comparison.

Recreation of an extremely rare promotional Hanafuda card from the 2016 “Mario Pikachu” Japan-only cross-promotion event. As high-quality scans of the card are currently not available, this recreation was made using photos of the card instead.

It depicts Mario Pikachu emerging from what is most likely intended to be the Slowpoke Well from the 2nd generation of Pokémon games, as that well is also depicted as having a similar short ladder leaning against it in some artwork.
