E3 2000 footage of Paper Mario contains a very peculiar name tag for an enemy. During a battle against a Spiked Gloomba, its name is briefly seen, which is ちかトゲクリ(サンタ).

The first part is apparently an early name for Spiked Gloombas, which translates to “underground” followed by a shortening of “Spiked Goomba”; equivalent to e.g. “Underground Spikegoom” in English.

The second part is the one that is notable, as it translates to “(Santa)”. What this might mean is unknown; no other Spiked Gloombas are seen to compare their names to see if they would also be Santa, nor is any special behavior noticeable that would explain the name. In the finished game, no connections between Santa and Spiked Gloombas is ever made in any language.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a specific Boo in Level 4-Ghost House is positioned precisely so that running directly to the left wall when entering its room will result in it becoming trapped in a state of eternal oscillation between hiding and revealing its face.

Unused early Peach and Daisy models found in the files of Mario Superstar Baseball. The white coloration of the dresses makes them resemble Fire Peach and Fire Daisy, though this is likely not by design and merely a result of missing in-engine coloration data.

Top: in Donkey Kong Country, the Master Necky boss is a bird whose main body is never seen. Instead, merely its head and neck appear from offscreen, being able to instantly switch what side of the screen it appears from.

Bottom: an official Japanese guide for the game contains a humorous illustration where Donkey Kong theorizes that the only way this is possible is if Master Necky actually has two heads, and each is simply hiding behind its own side of the screen.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Luigi’s Mansion, a computer terminal is seen next to Luigi while inside E. Gadd’s lab. The screen is too far from the camera and the resolution of the game too low to read the text on the monitor.

However, using a model viewer and zooming into the screen shows that it only displays “keysmash”-style gibberish.

In Super Mario Galaxy, regular Power Stars are textured normally, with yellow stars having a yellow texture, green stars a green texture, etc. However, Grand Stars are handled differently.

They have a texture that is completely black, with the yellow color only being added in-engine during gameplay. Here is what the Grand Star looks like when it is loaded without the color change being applied by the game at runtime.
