Luigi’s Mansion contains an unused “playable Mario” model in its files, which consists of Mario stretched to have proportions more similar to Luigi (and wearing straps for the Poltergust), likely for a scrapped two-player mode.

In pre-release footage of the game, Luigi was seen doing a “duck-walk” move, which has been completely removed from the game, and does not even remain in the files. However, this unused Mario still has the animation for the duck-walk in his data, so that it can be seen when modifying him to be playable.

In the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros., there is a difference between how Bowser’s fire breath sounds that depends on whether the game is played on a Famicom with square buttons or a Famicom with round buttons. In this post, the audio plays a square-button recording until 17 seconds in, then a round-button recording after the brief silence.

The reason for this is that the buttons are not the only difference between the console revisions, but that there has been a small modification in the console’s sound chip as well. It has nearly no effect on game audio except for very specific sounds that use the Famicom’s noise channel, like the fire breath.

Top: the Star List menu in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Bottom: the internal layout files for the game contain placeholder text for many elements that have no associated text in-game whatsoever, with some text being very bizarre. The placeholder text for the star icons in the Star List is “77eOOO777nnn7e7nnn7e7OOn 7eOO 77OO KeOO” in all languages.

In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, a rare glitch may occur during a battle against a group of Paper Spear Guys whereby they will encircle the plumbers, but then proceed to not attack and simply wait forever. As the player has no options to perform any input outside of making the plumbers jump, the game must be reset to continue playing.

Box art for an officially licensed Super Mario Kart board game from Japan, featuring rare official artwork of the cast celebrating. This artwork can only be found on one other piece of merchandise, being a sliding puzzle, and this instance is the only one where the artwork is not broken up by the dividing lines of the puzzle pieces.

A particular controller input widely used for a glitch in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (and other 3D Zelda game) speedrunning surprisingly also results in glitched behavior in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.

The input is known as the “ESS position”, named after the Extended Superslide, the glitch it is most commonly used for. It requires holding the analog stick precisely just outside the dead zone (the zone near the middle of the joystick where input is not registered as movement) tilted in the direction opposite the one Link is facing. The top image shows the input as detected by the software.

If this input is performed in the exact same way in Bowser’s Fury while Mario is swimming, he will swim backwards for as long as the stick is tilted in the ESS position.

An extremely bizarre glitch that was possible at launch in Super Mario Maker 2, but has been since patched, is the “Extremely Wide Thwomp” glitch.

For that, Mario needed to perform a Ground Pound with a Big Goomba’s Shoe into the Moon, with a Big Thwomp loading in at the same time Mario touched the Moon. If performed correctly, the Big Thwomp would be stretched so wide that it would appear as a nearly unrecognizable collection of rectangular pixels.
