Top: the forest section of the DS Mario Circuit track as it appears in the Booster Course Pass DLC of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Note the furthest trees being taller than the ones near the track.

Bottom: the way this is accomplished is extremely simplistic, through lifting low-quality models of the trees above the ones closer to the track. Instead of changing the models to more realistically reflect the appearance of tall trees, the lower parts are simple cylinders.

While most of the cylindrical parts are covered up by rows of trees in front of them, some of them can actually be seen during regular gameplay if the player is aware of this.

Top: rare Donkey Kong decoration seen in a 1996 episode of the Mexican Nintendomanía TV show.

Bottom: one of these decorations (though with a different tie) was recovered and displayed at the 2025 Portland Retro Gaming Expo.

Top: a piece of Super Mario Bros. concept art features a variety of early and unused sprites for Mario, alongside a different palette.

Bottom: it is assumed that the bottom two sprites are part of the same animation due to their similarity, though it is unknown what that animation would have been used for. Possibilities include being an early death animation or trying to get the player’s attention. This is a mock-up whereby the sprites were recreated from the concept art by finishing the uncolored portions.

Unused “Several Toadsworths” test room found in the files of Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey. Most of the Toadsworths do nothing and can only be pushed around slightly, while one of them walks around. What these Toadsworths were testing exactly is unknown.

Top: in Super Mario Odyssey, when Mario falls asleep in most outdoor areas, a bird will land on his nose. A detail that is very difficult to notice unless specifically falling asleep next to other birds is that Mario’s dedicated nosebirds are actually smaller than the other birds in the rest of the environment.

Bottom: in addition, these birds have a 15% chance of being a rare alternate type in the Wooded, Metro and Mushroom Kingdoms (top row: common type, bottom row: rare type). The alternate colorations also do not appear naturally in the environment and are nose-exclusive.

In Super Mario Sunshine, water rockets are items that appear only during the rollercoaster segments in Pinna Park. As such, Mario can never interact with them when he is not riding the rollercoaster.

Modifying the game to place a rocket in a location where Yoshi can touch it reveals that it adheres to Yoshi’s mouth, and creates a platform when shot (same as spraying an enemy with Yoshi’s juice). Whether this is in any way intentional, suggesting some planned interaction between Yoshi and the rockets, or simply a side effect of how the rocket interacts with FLUDD is unknown.

Note that in the first part of the footage, Mario was removed from Yoshi’s back for demonstrative purposes; the rocket adheres to Yoshi’s mouth the same way if nothing in the game is modified except placing the rocket outside the rollercoaster.

In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, if a player crosses the finish line while spinning out and touching the blocks on the side of the road simultaneously, a glitch will occur and a single lap will count as all remaining laps, ending the race instantly.

Normally, this can be achieved by placing a banana a certain distance before the finish line, but the Cheese Land track makes activating this glitch even easier. There is a Little Mouser positioned perfectly just in front of the finish line so that turning around at the start, hitting it and then driving at a specific angle will result in finishing the race in under 3 seconds.

This can be accomplished by any player with enough practice, so e.g. the footage is taken from regular gameplay instead of being tool-assisted.

An Electronic Games Magazine pre-release poster for Super Mario Sunshine features this unique render of Mario with FLUDD, which appears to not originate with Nintendo and instead be made directly by the magazine staff instead.
