In Super Mario 64 DS, the back room connected to the Rec Room features a large window, behind which a balcony and some hills are visible. This view seems to suggest there may be an explorable area beyond the window, but it is purely decorative.

In the footage, the game has been modified to let Yoshi pass through the window to attempt to land on the balcony. However, as would be unfortunately expected from a decorative part of the area geometry, the balcony and the hills lack collision, causing Yoshi to fall through the balcony into the void and die.

Of interest is the fact that the sky seen through the window is implemented differently from the sky in the rest of the game; while other areas use a skybox that is merely a graphic drawn behind all objects and does not actually exist in the scene, the sky here is drawn on a physical surface, as can be seen when Yoshi falls through it.

In Super Mario 64 DS, normally only Mario can get past the Endless Stairs to get to the Bowser in the Sky course and fight the final battle against Bowser. However, using glitches, it is possible for Luigi to get past the Endless Stairs as well.

This causes the cutscene after defeating Bowser to become glitched. Normally, touching the big star as Mario turns him into Wing Mario and starts a cutscene of him flying away. However, touching it as Luigi turns him into Wing Luigi, which is a form that is not supposed to exist outside of multiplayer mode. He cannot move in this form and will remain standing for the rest of the cutscene. In addition, a Mario is also spawned, and also does nothing.

The explanation for this is that under normal circumstances, the playable Mario despawns and is surreptitiously replaced with a cutscene Mario. However, the code does not state “remove the player character”, but instead “remove the player Mario”, so it fails to remove Luigi, while also spawning the Mario that is supposed to replace the removed Mario. In the end, neither the anomalous Wing Luigi nor the cutscene Mario are equipped to correctly handle the situation and simply continue standing around until the scene fades out.

In the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros./The Lost Levels, Bowser has a bizarre Γ-shaped hitbox that allows him to trap Small Mario at the rightmost end of the bridge, without actually hurting him.

However, while Mario is safe in this position (until the timer runs out), he is completely surrounded by Bowser’s hitbox both to the left and above him, so that he will eventually have to die one way or another.

In Super Mario Party Jamboree, a glitch exists in the “Sandwiched” minigame that will give players an unfair advantage and cause them to win automatically.

Top: as seen with Daisy in this footage, if a player falls into a hole and gets covered by a sandwhich, there is a chance of the game not registering that player as being squashed. This will cause the player to remain “active” for the rest of the minigame despite no longer being visible, and no longer needing to engage with the mechanics of the minigame.

Bottom: when the minigame finishes, it declares both Toadette and Daisy winners despite Toadette reaching the end legitimately through her own efforts while Daisy was handed the win through the glitch.

Top: the demo mode of Picross 2, the Japan-only sequel for Mario’s Picross on the Game Boy, shows a puzzle titled “Picross 2” that depicts a realistic man with a mustache, explorer hat and hammer.

Bottom: how Mario appears in the game. Due to being called “Picross 2” and wearing the same hat, holding the same hammer and having a mustache, it is almost certain that this man is supposed to be a realistic rendering of Mario himself.

When the Big Bully boss is defeated in the first mission of Lethal Lava Land in Super Mario 64, a staircase made out of falling platforms appears leading up to the star.

While the typical way in which these platforms present a hazard is falling and dropping Mario onto the lava, there is an extremely rare scenario where they can squish Mario instead.

Despite not being meant to be interacted with from below, the platforms are fully solid from all sides and as such have the ability to squish Mario by falling on top of him, if he is positioned in a very precise and unfortunate way.
