Super Mario World is one of the Mario games in which arbitrary code execution (ACE) is possible. ACE is the ability to use glitches to make the game execute not merely code it already contains but any instructions the system’s processor is capable of, essentially making the game fully editable.

Large sustained applications of ACE (usually only possible via tool assistance) can be used to completely reprogram a game, while small humanly-achievable applications can be used to make the game “jump” to unintended places in the code (used most often to skip to the credits for the purposes of speedrunning).

Super Mario World does not normally contain an anti-piracy message, however, the Super Mario World + Super Mario All-Stars version does. The footage above shows the end of a humanly-achievable (though still exceedingly complex) setup in which ACE is used to trigger the anti-piracy message during gameplay.

Development files for Yoshi’s Island contain an early version of the “hills and palm trees” background where these are animated. In the finished version of the game, these elements are no longer animated, but they are paired with animated clouds instead.

Top: Shiverians from Super Mario Odyssey as they appear during regular gameplay.

Middle: due to the large amount of Shiverians in the audience during the Bound Bowl minigames, they are replaced with a low-polygon version during this. While this can not be seen in-game, zooming in on the low-quality Shiverians shows that their eyes are angled as through they are sad.

Bottom: this is surprisingly not the only time low-quality versions of characters appear sadder than the regular ones in Mario games. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the low-quality female Toads in the Glitz Pit audience do not smile like the high-quality ones.

In Super Mario World, pressing Left and Right simultaneously (only possible with third-party hardware on the SNES and removed completely in the Nintendo Switch Online version) allows Mario to perform movement he would otherwise be unable to do, such as the Yoshi flight shown in the footage.

One side effect of this is that Mario (as well as Yoshi) will die when touching certain walls in this state. The footage also showcases what happens when Mario and Yoshi die while Yoshi is sticking out his tongue: any enemies that touch the tongue will be taken down with them, as happens to the Buzzy Beetle.
